Chin implants are common among patients who desire a more forward chin projection or patients who want a more prominent downwards projection. Cheek implants are useful for patients who feel that their mid-face area is sunken in. Cheek implants will help achieve higher and more prominent cheekbones, but Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Hsu, believes that moderation is key to a natural appearance. Chin and cheek implants are highly individualized based on each patient’s pre-operative anatomy and goals. The implants are available in various shapes and sizes and are composed of a firm type of silicone that mimics the consistency of bone.
There are several reasons patients may consider chin and cheek implants:
- Young patients who have inherited a deficient cheek structure
- Older patients with signs of aging in their cheeks
- Hollow and aged appearance in the lower face and under the eyes
- Patients who have gone through facial trauma and need cheek or chin reconstruction
- Patients with a recessive chin
- Patients seeking facial symmetry and balance with features like the nose, eyes, and ears
"I had seen Dr. Hsu a few years ago, when he was relatively new in Beverly Hills. Even though I had a Groupon cupon he took excellent care of me. I returned today after a few years of hiatus, and was a little woried, that now, that he is more established he probably won't be as engaging as he was before. I was TOTALLY wrong. His demeanor, bedisde manner are the same as they were before; he is very friendly, patiently answers all your questions, explains all the pros and cons of various options, and spends all the time you need with you.Fabulous professional."- J.M. / Yelp / Apr 05, 2017

"I came here for Microneedling with PRP. The procedure was done by Mimi who is amazing at what she does. She's super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the procedure. She was patient with me and took the time to explain the whole process and answered all of my questions. She made me feel comfortable and less anxious about having multiple needles digging into my face. The office itself is nice and clean. The receptionist was friendly and helpful.I have noticed a definite improvement in my face. My pores look tighter and my skin looks brighter. I can't wait to come back to have another one done by Mimi!"- C.S. / Yelp / Mar 31, 2017
"I highly recommend Nurse Practitioner Mimi. I had initially picked this office from the reviews that recommended her for the PRP with micro needling and I was so pleased with the experience and the results that I decided to return today for botox injections. Mimi is extremely gentle and knowledgeable. She took the time to evaluate my needs and explained how she could help me meet my aesthetic goals without trying to "sell" me on unneeded treatments. Mimi is fantastic!!! Additionally, the office is beautiful and has a modern yet warm and serene environment with an extremely professional and kind receptionist."- J.M. / Yelp / Mar 03, 2017

During the consultation, Dr. Hsu will first assess the area of concern, whether that is the chin or cheeks, and evaluate it in the context to the other parts of the face. This will help to ensure that the surgical plan achieves overall facial harmony. Next, Dr. Hsu will explain the next steps in going forth with the procedure and how the procedure will be customized for the patient.
Chin implant operations are completed in approximately 1-2 hours under general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Hsu will make a small incision underneath the chin or in the mouth, depending on the type of projection desired. Cheek implant operations are completed in approximately 2-3 hours, also under general anesthesia. In this operation, Dr. Hsu uses a lower eyelid incision to place the silicone implant in position.
Recovery & Post-Op@headingTag>
For chin implant surgery, Dr. Hsu will wrap dressings around the head and tape the chin for approximately a week to heal in an upward position. For the first couple of days, patients should consume a liquid diet to avoid uncomfortably chewing solids. For cheek implant surgery, patients should ice the area for the first 48 hours. It is very important to keep the head elevated and dry at all times during the recovery period. During the recovery period, walking assists with healing and minimizing the risk of blood clots. Patients are usually off their pain medication after five days and can return to work soon after. Around 6-8 weeks post-operation, most patients can return to their normal routines including exercise and returning to the gym. Follow-up appointments are scheduled immediately after surgery and for up to one year afterward.

“Chin or cheek implants are overall a nice way to change the facial contour. It seems to me that over the past decade, requests for chin implants have increased and yet requests for cheek implants have decreased. Nevertheless, they both can work quite well for the right patients.
Most patients I see for chin implants would like to have more forward projection of their chin, so that their profile looks more balanced (especially with regards to how the overall facial shape fits with the nose). In some of these patients, they would also like the chin implant to make the face slightly longer as well, to have a more “V-shaped” appearance from the front. For cheek implants, the objective is to have stronger appearing cheek bones in the upper cheek and right in front of the ears.”

Patients will feel tired and sore for a few days. There will be bruising and swelling as well. This is natural since all surgeries involve bruising and swelling of some kind. Patients can alleviate this pain using the prescription medication that Dr. Hsu will prescribe. Patients must also attend all follow-up visits so Dr. Hsu can check the patient’s progress.
There will be numbness when the patient talks, yawns, eats, and does anything that involves the jaw. The sutures in the mouth or eyes will dissolve within 2 weeks. Dr. Hsu advises patients to take up to 2 weeks off from work. Patients will also be advised to follow a soft food diet and avoid strenuous exercise for the next 6 weeks. Patients will have to avoid any situation that involves facial contact for 2 months.
Both chin and cheek implants are composed of silicone and are a permanent solution. Injectable dermal fillers are temporary and must be repeated to maintain results. The implant will be created before the surgery, but adjustments to the fit may be made after the implant is placed during surgery.
